3 Retirement Planning Tips for 2020

All of us here at our bank at the Lake of the Ozarks hope you had a very Merry Christmas and that you have a Happy New Year! The New Year will be starting soon and can inspire some people to make some positive financial changes. Perhaps you want to put more of an effort into your retirement savings actions in the new year? If that's the case, this is the blog for you! This Osage Beach bank in here to give you a few retirement planning tips for 2020 in this week's blog. If you have any questions on retirement planning or IRAs at the Lake of the Ozarks, please call First Bank of the Lake at (573) 348-2265.

1. The earlier you start saving the BETTER.

  • If you haven't already started saving for retirement, you should do so as soon as possible.
  • Time can feel like it moves very quickly and the more time you give yourself to save for retirement, the more money you will likely have when you actually retire.

2. Ask your local bank about ALL retirement planning options.
Here at First Bank of the Lake, we offer Roth IRAs and Traditional IRAs.

Roth IRAs
You may contribute up to $5,500 ($6,500 if you're age 50 or older) as long as you and/or your spouse have sufficient taxable income, but there are income limits above which you can't contribute. You do not get a tax deduction when you contribute to a Roth IRA, but withdrawals can be taken out completely free from income taxes, as long as you don't withdraw from the earnings on the account before the age of 59-1/2. You can contribute at any age, and you are not required to take a minimum distribution from your own Roth IRA.

Traditional IRAs
You may contribute up to $5,500 ($6,500 if you're age 50 or older) as long as you and/or your spouse (if filing jointly) have sufficient taxable income. You may get a tax deduction when you contribute, but your money is eventually taxed as ordinary income when you take it out. If you take it out before it is allowed (age 59-1/2), you can also incur a penalty, in addition to the tax due. You can't contribute past age 70-1/2. At age 70-1/2 you have to start taking "required minimum distributions."

Other conditions may apply, so please consult your tax advisor.

3. If offered retirement planning options through your work, TAKE THEM!

  • It is always nice if your employer offers a work 401K and it's even nicer if they offer to match whatever you put into it, up to a certain percentage.
  • We advise saying YES to this opportunity if it comes knocking.
  • This can be a very convenient way of saving for retirement if it applies to you.

First Bank of the Lake hopes you found these retirement tips for 2020 enlightening and helpful. Positive New Year's resolutions can be uplifting and if you are hoping to make a change to your financial situation and start putting away for retirement in 2020, we wish you the best of luck in your efforts. We offer different types of IRAs here and we would be happy to help you choose the best one for your needs. Give us a call today at (573) 348-2265.

Financial New Year's Resolution Ideas for 2020

2020 is right around the corner! Have you thought about what you may do differently financially in the New Year? Perhaps you will pay off your debt or at least start a real plan to pay off your debt. Maybe you will meet a savings goal for an end of year vacation you've been dreaming about. Whatever your financial goal for the New Year may be, you should take a look at the savings products at our bank in Osage Beach. They can be very helpful in reaching savings goals in particular. Learn more and visit the First Bank of the Lake website at www.FirstBankLake.com. To reach our Lake of the Ozarks bank, call (573) 348-2265. In the meantime, keep reading for a few ideas for making financial New Year's resolutions.

Financial New Year's Resolution Ideas for 2020

To pay off student loans.
So many people are in debt due to student loans. Having that debt can really weigh you down and affect your credit negatively if you don't have a steady plan for paying it off. If you are struggling to at least pay the minimum payment each month, take a hard look at what you spend money on. Are you going to the coffee shop for your coffee each day? Are you shopping for new clothes when your old clothes are still fine to wear? Cut back on unnecessary spending in the new year so you put that money toward paying off student loan debt.

To pay off credit card debt.
It can be very easy to spend money when you using a credit card because you can get into the habit of feeling like that money is yours but it's not, it's the credit card company's, meaning you have to pay it back. The point here is to not "bite off more than you chew," so to speak. Don't use your credit card on something you can't afford to pay back, be responsible with your credit.

To save for a vacation.
Everyone deserves a vacation and it can be healthy for you to give yourself the time off, but few people can likely afford to take a vacation whenever they want. Take one at the end of the year and save up money each month so when it comes time to pay for your vacation, you aren't making such a costly decision. You are using money that you have saved for this particular reason.

New Year, New Business?

Is 2020 the year? Is it the year that you finally start the business of your dreams, be your own boss? Starting and managing a profitable business is not for the weak-minded. In addition to being passionate about what you are doing, you should be financially prepared. That's where our Lake of the Ozarks SBA loan officers come in. We can help you find the financial help you need to get your business up and running. For more information on that, please call our bank at the Lake of the Ozarks today at (573) 348-2265. In the meantime, keep reading for a few tips for starting a new business in 2020.

Be passionate about what you do 100% of the time.
If you are serious about becoming a business owner, it's important to you truly love what you do because you will likely be working more than you ever have before in order to get your own business up and running. That will be much harder to do if you are not passionate about what you are doing.

Thinking about starting your business on the side.
It can be a good idea to keep your day job when starting a new business. If the business fails, you have a steady income to live on still. If the business takes a long time to become profitable, which is highly likely for new businesses, then it can be a good idea to have your day job still.

Build a customer base.
Plain and simple, you need customers in order to be successful. So it's important to build a strong, loyal customer base as early on as possible. Be the company that your customers have to go to because they're so happy they won't even consider going to a competitor.

Check out the competition.
Be aware of your competition and do your research. You need to stay updated on your market and how your industry is performing. You need to know how your competitors are marketing their businesses, what services they're offering, and how their pricing compares to yours. Being informed is being smart.

Market your business in a strategic way.
At the end of the day, ask yourself, did I communicate with my customers the way they like to be communicated to or the way I like to communicate? For example, if your primary target market is affluent women, then you should be advertising on Pinterest because they are the known market using that social media platform.

The SBA Loan Officers at First Bank of the Lake Are Here For You!

At First Bank of the Lake, we don't try to sell you a loan or service you don't need, but if you're in need of a small business loan at the Lake of the Ozarks, give us a call. Our SBA loan officers say "You have to spend money, to make money." For more information on our small business loans, please give us a call today. We can be reached at (573) 348-2265.
