3 Tips for Starting a Home-Based Business

Home-based businesses have become a more common trend over the years. The dream of becoming your own boss can be a reality, but you have to be willing to work hard, possibly harder than you have ever worked. How bad do you want that dream? You may also need some financial assistance getting started. For an SBA loan at the Lake of the Ozarks, call First Bank of the Lake at 573-348-2265. Keep reading for a few tips for starting a home-based business.

3 Tips for Starting a Home Based Business

Save money where you can by using free services.

When you are just starting your home-based business, the odds are you probably don't have a ton of incoming business yet. Be strategic and use free services where you can. For example, you could use Google Hangouts for business meetings with clients who may live hours away.

Get involved in the community.

One of the best ways to present your home-based business in the best light for your community is to get involved. For example, at the Lake of the Ozarks, there are several community groups you could get involved in, such as:

  • The Lake of the Ozarks Regional Economic Development Council
  • Kids Harbor
  • COPS
  • BNI Mid America
  • CADV
  • The Lake of the Ozarks Idiots Club
  • Rotary
  • The Missouri Forget Me Not Horse Rescue

Organizations like these are typically looking for volunteers or board members. Not only could you get the word out there about your new business, but you could be doing a genuinely good thing for the community and helping your neighbors.

Market your business and communicate with your customers the way they want to be communicated to.

Know your target demographic and how they like to be communicated to, whether it be through e-mails, social media, or phone calls. Also, pay attention to how your competitors are advertising. In today's age of technology, it is important to have an online presence so people can find you. Get yourself a working website and social media presence. Actively update your information and stay on top of your marketing efforts.

You Have to Spend Money to Make Money

Financial Advice for Young Couples That Live Together

Congratulations! You and your significant other have decided to take the next step in your relationship and cohabitate. This is a big step and shouldn't be approached lightly. Have you discussed financial topics yet? How will shared bills be paid? Our bank at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to give a little financial advice for young couples that live together. If you are looking to open a joint checking account with your significant other, call First Bank of the Lake at 573-348-2265.

Financial Advice for Young Couples That Live Together

Split your bills only where it feels right to you both.

Organization and communication are key when living with your significant other. Be fair with your significant other. One of you may not make nearly as much money as the other so it may not make sense to try and split every bill. You two are a team. Perhaps one of you pays a third of the rent and for all the groceries and the other pays for two-thirds of the rent and all the utilities. There are several variations and the trick is to find the right solution for you!

Consider opening a joint checking account.

If you share several expenses with your significant other, it may make sense to share a checking account too. This account could be solely for household expenses and you both could contribute a percentage of your incomes to it. You could set your bills up to be paid from this account and make the organization of how your bills will be paid easier on yourselves.

Pay your debt off separately.

If you are coming into a relationship with your own personal debts, then it may be easier on the relationship to just plan on paying off your own individual debt separately, rather than expecting your significant other to pay it off here. Everyone has different agreements that work for them though, so the point here is to communicate and figure out what works best for you both. Have a conversation about paying off debt so you are on the same page.

The Free Kasasa Cash® Checking Can Be YOUR Joint Checking Account

Get paid monthly in high interest! At First Bank of the Lake, we basically pay you to bank here. Open a free Kasasa Cash® checking account and get rewarded for doing simple banking activities, like using your debit card. Add the Kasasa Saver® to your account to make saving money easy and automatic for you and your significant other. Visit us today to open your accounts! You can also check out our website at www.FirstBankLake.com for more information.

Steps to Take to Retire at the Lake of the Ozarks

Have a budget and stick to it.
Congratulations! You have decided to retire at the Lake of the Ozarks and you couldn't be happier. You're ready for that dream lakefront home and to go boating every weekend. Just keep in mind that you are living on retirement funds alone now and what your budget is. Stick to it when buying a lakefront home and boat and any other luxury you may be considering at the Lake area.

Be strategic when buying a Lake home.
The Lake area has beautiful on water and off water residential properties that meet the needs of retirees. Consideration should be given to how the purchase of a particular property fits into the budgetary constraints of being retired. There's always a chance you find a fantastic deal. Just do your research and hire a professional, experienced Lake of the Ozarks real estate agent to help you.

Do your research before buying your boat.
Owning a boat can require a lot of work that you may not realize. Boating enthusiasts at the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks have boats of all types and prices, many of them being very expensive to buy and maintain. Consideration of a used boat might be wise if you are only an occasional boater or have budgetary constraints. There are numerous financing options, if needed, for the purchase of a new or used boat and should be considered in conjunction with your retirement budget.
