3 Retirement Planning Tips for 2020

All of us here at our bank at the Lake of the Ozarks hope you had a very Merry Christmas and that you have a Happy New Year! The New Year will be starting soon and can inspire some people to make some positive financial changes. Perhaps you want to put more of an effort into your retirement savings actions in the new year? If that's the case, this is the blog for you! This Osage Beach bank in here to give you a few retirement planning tips for 2020 in this week's blog. If you have any questions on retirement planning or IRAs at the Lake of the Ozarks, please call First Bank of the Lake at (573) 348-2265.

1. The earlier you start saving the BETTER.

  • If you haven't already started saving for retirement, you should do so as soon as possible.
  • Time can feel like it moves very quickly and the more time you give yourself to save for retirement, the more money you will likely have when you actually retire.

2. Ask your local bank about ALL retirement planning options.
Here at First Bank of the Lake, we offer Roth IRAs and Traditional IRAs.

Roth IRAs
You may contribute up to $5,500 ($6,500 if you're age 50 or older) as long as you and/or your spouse have sufficient taxable income, but there are income limits above which you can't contribute. You do not get a tax deduction when you contribute to a Roth IRA, but withdrawals can be taken out completely free from income taxes, as long as you don't withdraw from the earnings on the account before the age of 59-1/2. You can contribute at any age, and you are not required to take a minimum distribution from your own Roth IRA.

Traditional IRAs
You may contribute up to $5,500 ($6,500 if you're age 50 or older) as long as you and/or your spouse (if filing jointly) have sufficient taxable income. You may get a tax deduction when you contribute, but your money is eventually taxed as ordinary income when you take it out. If you take it out before it is allowed (age 59-1/2), you can also incur a penalty, in addition to the tax due. You can't contribute past age 70-1/2. At age 70-1/2 you have to start taking "required minimum distributions."

Other conditions may apply, so please consult your tax advisor.

3. If offered retirement planning options through your work, TAKE THEM!

  • It is always nice if your employer offers a work 401K and it's even nicer if they offer to match whatever you put into it, up to a certain percentage.
  • We advise saying YES to this opportunity if it comes knocking.
  • This can be a very convenient way of saving for retirement if it applies to you.

First Bank of the Lake hopes you found these retirement tips for 2020 enlightening and helpful. Positive New Year's resolutions can be uplifting and if you are hoping to make a change to your financial situation and start putting away for retirement in 2020, we wish you the best of luck in your efforts. We offer different types of IRAs here and we would be happy to help you choose the best one for your needs. Give us a call today at (573) 348-2265.

Financial New Year's Resolution Ideas for 2020

2020 is right around the corner! Have you thought about what you may do differently financially in the New Year? Perhaps you will pay off your debt or at least start a real plan to pay off your debt. Maybe you will meet a savings goal for an end of year vacation you've been dreaming about. Whatever your financial goal for the New Year may be, you should take a look at the savings products at our bank in Osage Beach. They can be very helpful in reaching savings goals in particular. Learn more and visit the First Bank of the Lake website at www.FirstBankLake.com. To reach our Lake of the Ozarks bank, call (573) 348-2265. In the meantime, keep reading for a few ideas for making financial New Year's resolutions.

Financial New Year's Resolution Ideas for 2020

To pay off student loans.
So many people are in debt due to student loans. Having that debt can really weigh you down and affect your credit negatively if you don't have a steady plan for paying it off. If you are struggling to at least pay the minimum payment each month, take a hard look at what you spend money on. Are you going to the coffee shop for your coffee each day? Are you shopping for new clothes when your old clothes are still fine to wear? Cut back on unnecessary spending in the new year so you put that money toward paying off student loan debt.

To pay off credit card debt.
It can be very easy to spend money when you using a credit card because you can get into the habit of feeling like that money is yours but it's not, it's the credit card company's, meaning you have to pay it back. The point here is to not "bite off more than you chew," so to speak. Don't use your credit card on something you can't afford to pay back, be responsible with your credit.

To save for a vacation.
Everyone deserves a vacation and it can be healthy for you to give yourself the time off, but few people can likely afford to take a vacation whenever they want. Take one at the end of the year and save up money each month so when it comes time to pay for your vacation, you aren't making such a costly decision. You are using money that you have saved for this particular reason.

New Year, New Business?

Is 2020 the year? Is it the year that you finally start the business of your dreams, be your own boss? Starting and managing a profitable business is not for the weak-minded. In addition to being passionate about what you are doing, you should be financially prepared. That's where our Lake of the Ozarks SBA loan officers come in. We can help you find the financial help you need to get your business up and running. For more information on that, please call our bank at the Lake of the Ozarks today at (573) 348-2265. In the meantime, keep reading for a few tips for starting a new business in 2020.

Be passionate about what you do 100% of the time.
If you are serious about becoming a business owner, it's important to you truly love what you do because you will likely be working more than you ever have before in order to get your own business up and running. That will be much harder to do if you are not passionate about what you are doing.

Thinking about starting your business on the side.
It can be a good idea to keep your day job when starting a new business. If the business fails, you have a steady income to live on still. If the business takes a long time to become profitable, which is highly likely for new businesses, then it can be a good idea to have your day job still.

Build a customer base.
Plain and simple, you need customers in order to be successful. So it's important to build a strong, loyal customer base as early on as possible. Be the company that your customers have to go to because they're so happy they won't even consider going to a competitor.

Check out the competition.
Be aware of your competition and do your research. You need to stay updated on your market and how your industry is performing. You need to know how your competitors are marketing their businesses, what services they're offering, and how their pricing compares to yours. Being informed is being smart.

Market your business in a strategic way.
At the end of the day, ask yourself, did I communicate with my customers the way they like to be communicated to or the way I like to communicate? For example, if your primary target market is affluent women, then you should be advertising on Pinterest because they are the known market using that social media platform.

The SBA Loan Officers at First Bank of the Lake Are Here For You!

At First Bank of the Lake, we don't try to sell you a loan or service you don't need, but if you're in need of a small business loan at the Lake of the Ozarks, give us a call. Our SBA loan officers say "You have to spend money, to make money." For more information on our small business loans, please give us a call today. We can be reached at (573) 348-2265.

Prepping For Thanksgiving on a Budget

Thanksgiving 2019 is next week! Can you believe it? This year is going by so fast. With Christmas following shortly behind Thanksgiving, you're likely trying to save every penny you can to prepare that Thanksgiving can be tough, with everything that needs to be done, especially if you are hosting. Have no fear though, our bank at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help! This Osage Beach bank knows how tough it can be to budget for every holiday and having a savings account at the Lake of the Ozarks you can count on to help you really build your savings is essential. Check out the Free Kasasa Saver at First Bank of the Lake by visiting https://firstbanklake.com/kasasa-saver.html. In the meantime, keep reading for a few tips for prepping for Thanksgiving on a budget in this week's blog.

Prepping For Thanksgiving on a Budget

Do an inventory on your pantry!
Have you ever gone to the store, bought everything you know you need for this special holiday recipe, came home, checked your pantry for something and realized you already had many of the ingredients needed? Don't you just hate it when this happens? Prepping holiday dishes for everyone for Thanksgiving can be really stressful at times and you can feel like you never have enough money or time to get everything done. However, this simple change, just checking your pantry before you start may end up saving you a ton of money and time and help way more than you expect.

Be strategic with your turkey.
Think about how many people are coming to your Thanksgiving. Do you really need a whole turkey? You can buy parts of the turkey, versus the whole turkey. For example, just buy the breast and serve that to your guests.

Make Thanksgiving BYOB.
BYOB or Bring Your Own Booze can be a very effective method of prepping for Thanksgiving on a budget. Have your guests bring their own wine, beer, or drinks of choice. Buying alcoholic beverages for everyone can be very costly, so try this way to save some money.

Host a Thanksgiving potluck.
You can also have each guest bring a side and you can offer to handle the meat, by the time the last guests get there with their delicious side, you could have a full meal for a lot less money.

Save Your Money For The Holiday Season with First Bank of the Lake!

We understand the struggles of simply AFFORDING the holiday season these days, but we can help you by offering a savings product that can not only help you save but essentially pays you for banking locally. That may be hard to believe, but that's exactly what you get when you sign up for the Free Kasasa Saver® at First Bank of the Lake. Learn more and visit https://firstbanklake.com/kasasa-saver.html.

How To Save Money This Christmas

Christmas 2019 will be here before you know it! This is supposed to be a happy time of year but many people are stressing about how they will be able to afford it. Our bank at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to let you know you shouldn't worry because there are ways you can save money this Christmas but still deliver an awesome holiday party to your loved ones. Keep reading for a few of those money-saving holiday tips. If you would REALLY like to save some money this year, open up a fantastic savings account at the Lake of the Ozarks. First Bank of the Lake offers the Free Kasasa Saver® that can help you build your savings automatically.

Money-Saving Holiday Tips

Try Secret Santa This Year!
Instead of having to purchase gifts for all family members and friends that attend your Christmas party each year, draw names at Thanksgiving (where the same people will likely be) and hold a Secret Santa drawing, where each person only buys one present and it's for whoever they drew for Secret Santa. This way you could save a ton of money as you are only buying one gift versus the several you normally would buy for everyone.

Have a Budget and Stick To It!
Know what you can realistically spend this year for Christmas 2019 and stick to that. Don't be tempted to spend even more money and focus on your budget. You don't have to spend tons of money to make Christmas special because that's not what this holiday is all about.

Shop The Deals, There's More This Year!
It has been announced that Black Friday deals have started very early this year, as early as the day after Halloween. There are six fewer shopping days this year, so take advantage of these deals because you can start saving money on your Christmas shopping right now.

Make Christmas Dinner a Pot Luck!
Rather than spending so much money on several Christmas dishes this year, start a pot luck tradition! This allows for family members and friends who may be attending your Christmas party to bring in dishes. This way you only have to spend money on one dish, versus every dish. In addition to saving money, pot luck can also save you a ton of time and stress.

Save Money For Christmas 2019 with First Bank of the Lake!

All of us here at First Bank of the Lake would like to wish everyone a very happy holiday season this year. We know that while this is supposed to be a very special time of year, it can be stressful at times financially. Q: What do you mean when you say "earn rewards"?

A: We also have Kasasa® checking accounts here. You can learn more about those HERE. Qualifying for your Kasasa Cash or Kasasa Cash Back rewards automatically qualifies you for the highest Kasasa Saver rate, too. To earn your rewards, just do the following transactions and activities in your Kasasa Cash or Kasasa Cash Back account during each Monthly Qualification Cycle:

  • Have at least 12 debit card purchases post and settle
  • Be enrolled in and log into online banking

That’s really it! Even if you don’t meet these qualifications, there are no penalties — your accounts are still free. Plus, you’ll still earn our base rate on your Kasasa Saver balance. And you can get right back to earning your full rewards the very next cycle that you qualify.

How To Plan Your Halloween Party On a Budget

Potlucks are GREAT for saving money at parties.
If you are on a very strict budget this year and are trying very hard to stick to it, but you still want to throw an awesome party, you can do it. You'll just need to change things up a bit and be a little more selective on where you spend money. When it comes to food, throwing a potluck is a good way to do that.

DIY or Do It Yourself when it comes to your decorations.
There are so many tutorials on free printable templates out there that can help you design the BEST decorations for the perfect Halloween party without having to spend a bunch of money doing so. Here are a few examples of DIY Halloween decorations:

  • Fake tombstones in your yard made from cardboard and paint
  • Bats hanging from your front porch made from black cardstock paper and fishing line
  • Witches legs next to your house made from paper town rolls, paints, and shoes (appearing as if your house fell on a witch like in The Wizard of Oz)

Dollar stores are your best friend.
When it comes to gathering supplies for DIY Halloween decorations when you're on a budget, go to your local dollar store. You can find all sorts of great supplies there, such as battery-operated tea candles to go inside of pumpkins, fake fall-themed garland, and flowers, and Halloween candy for example.

Happy Halloween From First Bank of the Lake!

Get To Know Our Team - Dionne Torrence

1. How did you get started in the banking industry?  I needed a change… applied as a teller, for a local bank and found that working in banking provided me with a skill set that was always needed.

2. What is your position at the bank? What are some of your key responsibilities?  My title is a Loan Coordinator, and I am responsible for making sure that all documents are prepared as well as gathering all information required for the bank to meet all Compliance Regulations required by the Federal and State Government. I provide a seamless loan closing experience for the loan officers that I work with.

3. What brought you to the Lake of the Ozarks? My parents bought a 50 unit Resort/Hotel.  My then 4 year old son and I moved with them.  I loved being a part of Lake Life.

4. Where did you attend school? I graduated from Chillicothe High School in Chillicothe, Missouri.

5. What do you enjoy the most about your job? Firstly – the people I work with.  I couldn’t ask for better co-workers.  Secondly – banking is always changing.  There is always something new to learn.

6. How do you enjoy spending your time when not at work? I spend time with family.  We love to cook and gather together.  I have a dog that loves walking with me and going to Ha Ha Tonka State Park.  I am an avid reader and like to create and repurpose unique furniture.

7. When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?  I wanted to be a Psychologist.

8. What is your dream vacation destination? The Mediterranean Why? So much history and beauty to experience and the color of the water just draws me in.

9. What is something few people know about you? I’m an open book.

10. If you won the lottery, what would you do? I don’t know yet, but I hope to find out soon though.
